Given all the unrest and crises in the world (are they ever gone?), I re-read an article by a beautiful writer Marianna Pogosyan, PhD, on PsychologyToday's "Between Cultures" blog. Although she interviewed me for it for which I am grateful, I love what she wrote in "Why Choose Kindness":

"Kindness moves us. It nourishes and heals; strengthens and uplifts. A smile, a touch born of kindness can crack open the most rugged of hearts, unclench the tightest of fists. It has been hailed by poets, philosophers and spiritual leaders as a gift, a religion, a language audible to the deaf and visible to the blind, a weapon to fight evil, and mankind’s greatest delight. And now, science is showing just why the accolades ring true."

People often ask me if I think people are less emp

People often ask me if I think people are less empathetic in today’s world. It’s a good question. After all, just a quick glance to the daily news or a social media feed is a sure-fire way to trigger feelings of doom and gloom. Another senseless tragedy? Political implosion? Irritation toward an unsuspecting family member or co-worker maybe? Low grade chronic stress? An urge to run for the hills to hide? I’m with you. On more than one occasion in the recent past I have told my friends that I’ll be moving to Canada, or even better, to cozy Denmark where the supposed happy people live.

But running away doesn’t have to be our go-to.

I can’t recall my first therapist's name to my e

I can’t recall my first therapist's name to my embarrassment. I was 26 years old. She was probably the age I am now. But I do remember three things:

1) Once she interrupted me in the middle of a session to take a bio break. Life lesson: It's OK to take care of yourself.

2) After I shared an odd client moment with a 12-year-old girl’s dad, she blurted out: “He copped a feel!” Like didn't I get it? Life lesson: Don’t ignore your gut feelings.

3) When it came to my deadbeat dad she invited me to think of him more like a distant uncle. Someone I might see at a random holiday or send a card to. It blew my mind to reconfigure my family tree and heal the little part of me who yearned for a father that could never be. Life lesson: You can spiritually reparent yourself.
